What is the Bowen Technique

Jay Bolton is a former Psychiatric Nurse who retrained as a Bowen Therapist following receiving Bowen Technique for acute back pain.

Jay was amazed at the profound response he got from the very subtle and light treatment he was given.

Jay provides a relaxed confidential environment to assess and explore his clients discomfort Jay encourages his clients to look at ways in which their lifestyles may be maintaining their pain and discomfort.

Jay has an holistic approach to healthcare that looks beyond symptom reduction and aims to improve wellbeing by developing healthy  and sustainable lifestyle changes with his clients.

Eat healthily, sleep well, breathe deeply, move harmoniously.”  jean-pierre Barral

Before a treatment session please ensure that you have loose light clothing - no jeans, belts or anything restrictive. I often ask my female clients to wear a sports bra if they have one. Please turn your phone off  and be prepared to relax!

After a treatment session please continue to take regular sips of water over the following days. Try to be mindful of your body balance - notice how equal your weight is through your ankles, knees, hips, shoulders and jaw when you are standing. Try to avoid putting too much weight on one side. Please go for a walk sometime after a treatment. Breathe deeply and swing your arms!

Hold On Pain Ends

Bowen Technique is named after an Australian bodyworker called Tom Bowen (1916-1982).

He described himself as an Osteopath but he had no formal training - in fact, when he tried to register as an Osteopath after years of practise, he was rejected because he was untrained and unqualified. Tom Bowen reported that he was providing 13,000 treatments a year.

His reputation comes from treating thousands of ordinary working people with minimal intervention, a light touch and pauses between the moves. He was unable or unwilling to explain how or why his method works . He did in later life allow a small number of people to observe his work, but only one morning a week - because he was so busy giving treatments!

It is from those observers, mainly Osteopaths, that the Bowen Technique was devised.

The Bowen Technique is a set of principles about how to apply the Bowen Move.

The Bowen Technique was introduced into the UK by Julian Baker, who was taught by one of those Bowen observers in Australia. Julian has since developed a series of procedures, principles and a method of body work. Julian started the first comprehensive Bowen Technique training courses in the UK and continues to develop an understanding of Bowen and the body by exploring Fascia and Integrated Structural Physiology through extensive dissection work.

Fascia is the connective tissue in our bodies that a Bowen move attempts to manipulate. It is the material that makes up Adipose tissue, tendons and cartilidge, it contains muscle tissue and surrounds and contains all of our organs. It is the material through which our blood vessels, nerves and lymphatic system travels.

The Bowen move seems to stimulate Fascia to produce a parasympathetic nervous system response which is experienced as a deep relaxation. It is during this relaxed state that that the Bowen practitioner encourages various muscle groups to reintegrate their tensional relationships by applying specific Bowen moves and procedures.

Bowen Fascial Release Technique has been observed to help with pain management, sports injuries, acute and chronic back pain, sciatica, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and general aches and pains.
Whiplash, jaw discomfort (TMD / TMS), asthma, hayfever, headaches / sinus, stress and tension. Digestive problems, chronic fatigue, heel and foot pain are also common complaints seen by Bowen Technique therapists.

Bowen Fascial Release Technique is increasingly being used by clients to help cope with symptoms of depression and anxiety.
